Advaita Vedanta is a non-dualistic school of Hindu philosophy and spiritual practice that emphasizes the idea that the individual self (आत्मन् Atman) and the universal self (ब्रह्मन् Brahman) are one and the same. Propounded by the 8th-century philosopher Adi Shankara, it teaches that the perception of separation between self and the universe is an illusion (माया Māyā ) that can be transcended through knowledge (Jnana) and meditation. Advaita Vedanta holds that liberation (Moksha) is achieved by realizing this fundamental unity and shedding the ignorance that obscures true understanding.
