Greetings, students and readers of The Great Library of Alexandria. I am Morihei Ueshiba, born on December 14, 1883, in the Wakayama Prefecture of Japan. My journey through life has been one of discipline, spiritual enlightenment, and the creation of a legacy that transcends mere physical combat. Let me share with you the story of my life, a tale of highs and lows, victories and challenges, which shaped my character, beliefs, and destiny. As a child, I was frail and often ill, but my father's encouragement led me to pursue physical strength through sumo wrestling and swimming. Despite my physical limitations, I found solace and strength in nature, developing a deep connection with the natural world. This early period of my life instilled in me a sense of perseverance and the belief that true power comes from within. My martial arts training began in earnest when I moved to Tokyo at the age of 18. There, I trained in various martial arts, including jujutsu and kenjutsu. However, it was not until I met the master Sokaku Takeda that I found my true path in Daito-ryu Aiki-jujutsu. Under Takeda's rigorous training, I honed my skills and learned the essence of blending with an opponent's energy rather than opposing it.The pivotal moment in my life came in 1919 when I encountered Onisaburo Deguchi, a spiritual leader of the Omoto-kyo religion. His teachings on spirituality and harmony profoundly influenced me and transformed my martial arts

practice. I realized that true martial arts were not about defeating others but about cultivating harmony and protecting all life. This epiphany led to the creation of Aikido, the "Way of Harmony." The journey to establish Aikido was not without challenges. During the tumultuous years of World War II, I faced hardships, including the destruction of my dojo and the disbandment of my students. Yet, these trials only strengthened my resolve. I retreated to Iwama, where I deepened my spiritual practices and refined Aikido, emphasizing its philosophical and spiritual dimensions. My life was marked by significant accomplishments. I founded the Aikikai Foundation and established dojos across Japan, spreading the art of Aikido globally. My teachings attracted students from all walks of life, including military personnel, scholars, and ordinary citizens. Aikido's principles of non-resistance, harmony, and the integration of mind, body, and spirit resonated with many, transcending cultural and national boundaries.

As I aged, I continued to teach and refine Aikido, leaving a legacy that endures to this day. My philosophy that true martial strength lies in compassion and unity remains a guiding light for Aikido practitioners worldwide. My life's work has contributed to a greater understanding of martial arts as a means of personal and spiritual development, not merely physical combat. I passed away on April 26, 1969, but my teachings live on through my students and the countless dojos dedicated to Aikido across the globe. My life's journey, from a frail child to the founder of Aikido, embodies the transformative power of perseverance, spiritual enlightenment, and the pursuit of harmony. May my story inspire you to seek inner strength, harmony, and a deeper connection with the world around you.
