Zen Buddhism is a school of Mahāyāna Buddhism that emphasizes direct, experiential realization of enlightenment through meditation and mindfulness. Originating in China as Chán Buddhism, it was later transmitted to Japan where it became known as Zen. Practice focuses on Zazen (seated meditation), Kōans (paradoxical anecdotes), and the pursuit of a deep, intuitive understanding of one's true nature.
